I spent a fantastic day a couple of months ago taking part in the Sounding the City workshop. The day organised by Nina Williams from the University of Bristol explored the use of field recording as a way of guiding and documenting an urban walk. Ten participants split into pairs then followed the same mapped route around the city centre. Each group was asked to make a sound recording at ten allotted locations.
The edited recordings are to be aired at the following exhibition at the Edwardian Cloakroom, Bristol:

I am showing three pieces: Up in the air, Heavy Weather II and Haven (see below), which I have not shown before.

The Searchers contemporary ‘One Year Gallery Project’ was opened in Bristol by practicing artist and exhibition maker Ruth Piper in September 2012. The gallery program focus’s on a rich seam of contemporary art in all its forms, providing a commercial venue with curated shows including artists from Bristol and London; in particular those whose work side steps fashion and conveys a deeply felt personal engagement with their materials and subject matter.
It was John Ford’s classic western ‘The Searchers’ that inspired the title for the gallery. Obsessive and curious by nature artists travel alone, searching through unfamiliar territory, hoping for fresh insights & new configurations.
My proposal for GLOW is one of ten projects shortlisted by the Bristol Festival of Ideas for the Temple Meads Gateway.
By wrapping a disused building in white and including a printed representation of the Bristol skyline, GLOW will provide daytime visitors with an intriguing and welcoming image. As dusk falls the building will be illuminated from within by a pulsating orange glow. This will evoke the sun setting in the West, and provide evening visitors with the transformed image of the backlit Bristol skyline.
Below is a short film showing a visualisation of how GLOW might look:
