For about a year and a half, Helen Acklam, James Vassallo and myself worked together on the Inside/Out project. All having personal connections with the valleys of South Wales and a crossover of interests in its unique post industrial landscape, as well as in our own practices (sculpture, drawing and photography respectively). We spent time finding our way, by walking and talking and ultimately making work that responded to the post mining/colliery landscape of Pontycymer and Blaengarw. This process culminated with the inside/out exhibition at Oriel Y Bont, at the University of South Wales.

For the exhibition my focus was the reclaimed site of the Ocean Colliery in Blaengarw. I made two bodies of digital photography (‘Past materials’ & ‘Rising to the surface’), plus a series of the instant film documentary prints, plus a sound collage ‘walking up David St’ constructed from a series of Field Recordings made with sound artist Phil Cass in and around the ‘top lake’.
